It caught my eye one morning! It was a get up too early weekend so I thought I would catch up on some ironing while watching TV. The first station on the boob tube was a NuWave Oven infomercial.
Most of the time I would click through to old re-runs of Law and Order or House Hunters, but today I thought I would sit for awhile to see just what this “revolutionary kitchen counter-top appliance” was all about.
The longer I watched the more it pulled me in. I’ll spare you all the commercial hype and tell you what hit me about the NuWave oven the most. My 4 children have come and gone, so it’s just my husband and I and frankly, I don’t like to cook anymore but I do like a well prepared meal. It was this empty nest ambivalence that was causing me to get sloppy in the kitchen, and worst of all putting on weight!
My husband had also had developed type 2 Diabetes a few years ago, so the lazy way of cooking from pre-packaged convenience was also taking its toll on his blood sugar battles.
So, while watching the show, I realized this was product I wanted to help keep my weight and his diabetes under control – IF IT DELIVERED WHAT WAS PROMISED.
I gave it a few days of thought, did a little google searching on “newwave oven reviews”; couldn’t find anything really negative about it, so I went ahead and ordered the NuWave Oven Pro (Black Model that comes with the extender ring and other extra stuff).
Now that I’ve used the NuWave now for several months, I’ve gotten a good handle the strengths and weaknesses of the NuWave Oven. You can find plenty of positive info so I’m changing it up a bit, by listing the characteristics I find most annoying.

The Rack is a pain to clean! It’s like a miniature Weber grill in that it has the rack and drip tray like the big boys. The rack is a good sized in that it fits in the sink or dishwasher just fine but it still takes some effort to get the thing free of all food particles. I also started getting lazy with the drip tray, by leaving it in the bottom catching grease through more than one meal. What would happen is the grease would melt between meals so bacon, chicken, hamburger and other assorted meat fat would now co-mingle and taint the flavor of the food. Sort of like old grease in a fast food fryer.
I know, I am lazy, but I’m thinking they could have designed some sort of grease draining system, something like a George Foreman Grill where the grease slides off into a tray outside the appliance (and directly into the trash
).

This laminated NuWave quick reference cooking gets 4 stars!
The commercial makes cooking look so easy, but it does take a bit of practice to get the food cooked right. It’s tricky right out of the box to not under cook or over cook despite this easy food cooking timing chart that provides the minutes needed to cook meat, vegetables, deserts, breads, etc. About the only thing that turns out gloriously delicious the first time is the one they always demo on the show – THE CHICKEN! Visually perfectly browned and deliciously moist and savory.

A NuWave instructional DVD comes with every order.
In its defense, the NuWave Oven order includes a DVD that may help with the tweaking process of timing foods right, but come-on who actually watches those things?!
My first flop was the NuWave Pot Roast Recipe; read about it here.
Since then I’ve only had mild mishaps that didn’t ruin the meal.

Flipping the food. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Every piece of meat, fish or chicken has to be flipped mid cooking stage. Take the whole chicken meal. You start by placing the bird on it’s back, after 20 minutes it needs to be flipped over so the breast is up and the back is down. The first time I flipped I hit my hand on the grill and suffered a slight burn. Frankly, the flipping thing gets a little slippery at times but the results are worth the strangeness. It’s all about sealing in the juices and cooking evenly. I guess, I should watch the DVD.
Breads and other pan foods do not need to be flipped, but foil is important to prevent the top from browning too fast.
What I DO Like
After negatives, let’s go with the good stuff. Despite the negatives I’ve mentioned here, my constant use of this little puppy proves it to be a valuable asset to my lazy cooking ways.

It does what is advertised. It still amazes me that I can take a whole, previously cleaned and seasoned, then frozen chicken, out the freezer and cook it; with no defrosting and in half the time! The chicken comes out just as delicious as the pictures show. Wonderful! As of this posting I’ve done frozen fish, nuggets, steak, pork, and bacon; all have come out just as good as I expected. They weren’t all perfect though, I’ve written about one fiasco though that you can read by clicking the NuWave Recipe link.

I love the fact, especially in the hot heat of summer how it takes half the time (or less) to cook foods that it does in a regular oven. The warm up time alone in the regular oven already does it work heating up the kitchen. You can hardly tell the NuWave is on from the level of radiant heat. It truly does save money in energy and sweat equity. Honestly, I use it all the time for baking (pies and muffins), melting (nachos and texas toast) and roasting (everything in the protein department). I have yet to try the dehydration feature, but it’s probably only a matter of time.

Convenience, convenience, convenience. Now, did I mention convenience? Nothing beats the freezer to oven way of cooking, once you start understanding the particulars of each food. Of course the microwave has been doing that for years, but I definitley notice a difference in flavor and of nuwave over microwave. The push-button timer and energy levels are similar to the microwave, but there is just something more satisfying about actually cooking food rather than radiating a meal. Unlike the prepared microwave oven foods, you can cook anything in the NuWave like a microwaved meal based on time. Just remember to not put plastic into the NuWave (like I did) it will melt.
Conclusion?
I believe the NuWave Oven is truly is a great product. Between the NuWave and the rice cooker I am cooking happy! So much in fact, as I’ve shared my cooking exploits using the NuWave with my co-workers and friends; 4 have already purchased their own!
According to VIEWPOINTS , a respected reviewers website, 87% of reviewers (110 out of 127) without hesitation recommend the NuWave Oven…here’s a few of their comments quoted directly from the site:
This is the best small appliance purchase that I have ever made! I absolutely love this little oven. I have been able to cook anything from a pizza to brownies in it. It is very easy to clean after each use and doesn’t require any type of scrubbing or special cleaners to bring it back to its original condition. This is the perfect gadget for a single person that likes to cook one meal at a time. I ordered this because I moved into an apartment that had a gas oven, which I hate to use. This has turned out to be the best little find and money well spent. I use it everyday and will be ordering a replacement whenever I run this one into the ground. In addition, this would make a great gift for parents that don’t want their kids using the stove when they aren’t home, but still want to allow them the freedom to cook for themselves.

“NUWAVE OVEN IS SUPERB!”
I can only say that the nuwave oven lives up to all the claims they make in their infomercial. I consider myself to be fairly competent in the kitchen, but the nuwave oven has turned me into a five star chef. I cannot praise this nuwave oven enough when it comes to preparing any meat selection whether it be prepared from a fresh or frozen state. It is also unbelievable too how quickly this oven accomplishes the task at hand. Fast cooking time with always perfect results is the dream of any kitchen enthusiast and the nuwave oven surely delivers in that department. With the purchase of a few additional accessories, you have the ability to produce an entire meal in one quick preparation. This oven is also great for turning out family favorites such as pizza in lightning speed. And the final comment on this oven is that cleanup is a snap!
“THIS THING IS GREAT!”
I received this Nu-Wave for Christmas. All I can say is that since the opening of business on 25th December, I have many dishes in it and it works great! I am a simple man who has never cooked in my life. This machine replaces several appliances in my kitchen that my toaster oven, stove and oven. The Nu-Wave can make my life much easier because you can cook faster. Cleaning is a breeze. So far I’ve cooked meats, hamburgers, hot dogs, shrimp, biscuits, bacon, yesterday for the first time in my life I’ve got a whole roasted chicken, whose origin has frozen! Yes, as marketing materials, for example, you can cook frozen food! The recipient must be preheated not good. Just follow the hob or in cookbooks or plastic card and eat it in no time! I am also very surprised by the amount of available space in the kitchen. From the looks of things, it seems you can not have much food on the plate surface. But last week I was able, 4 large fish fillets in it! I am a hot dog eater. This machine makes the best hot dogs! I like the fact that this machine cook food. No points are lost when cooked on the grill. I recommend this machine for those who do not want trouble with the traditional cuisine. Buy today!
